Rising Rodent Problem

As homes age, they naturally wear and tear. Natural disasters, strong winds, and seasonal weather patterns all affect a building’s ability to resist pests. Small crevices and holes become exaggerated as time goes on allowing pathways for unwanted pests to enter the home. Although other methods of reducing rodent numbers are effective, long-term control requires an expert eye to locate the entry points and seal them.

Rodents can fit through holes the size of their heads which can be as small as ¼ inch depending on the type. While pipes, drains, and vents are common entries, entry points can often be hidden and seemingly invisible. If you’ve been struggling with rodents in your building but have already sealed most entry points, Asset Pest Management recommends professional help to locate all entry points, even the smallest and inconspicuous ones.

Roof Rats - The Most Common Rodent in the Texas Hill Country

What are roof rats?

Roof rats are the most common rodent affecting the Texas Hill Country. They often nest in the highest parts of buildings and hence have coined the name “Roof Rat.” They are one of two common types of infestive rats. While Norway rats are large, roof rats are small with long tails. Of their 13-18 inch length, only 7 or so inches make up their body. They are sometimes also called ship rats as they are most common in coastal areas, however, they can be found across the United States. Unfortunately, these rodents populate quickly and can carry diseases. For the safety of your loved ones, we recommend starting a treatment plan as soon as possible.

What do they eat?

Rodents eat both plans and animals. They eat a variety of nuts, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and small bugs like slugs.

Our Solution

Roof rats may invade a building for a variety of reasons. Food and water supply is often the most common reason. We highly advise that all food and water are stored in thick plastic sealed containers. However, these rats can still find plenty of food to survive without taking anything from the home. Additionally, these rats often come from undeveloped outdoor fields where shelter is less reliable. If you live by an open outdoor area, we recommended hiring a professional service for removal. These rats are often tougher to remove if they have a source of food and water outside of the home.

Once on the property, our team will scan the areas for any entry points. Entry points can be as small as ¼ inches so this is a tedious but worthwhile process. We also often use traps that bait the animals with food. It is a much cleaner and safer method than poison because we are able to prevent dying rats from entering vents or pipes.

Once the building has seen a significant decrease in population, it is important to maintain it with proper aftercare. Traps will be left around the roof and building to control excess or incoming rats. Trash cans should have tight-fitting lids, food and water should be kept in tightly sealed thick packaging, cracks should be sealed and screens can be placed over vents or pipes.
